Overview
A durable editorial platform for history, scholarship, archives, and community voices.
Legacies of San Juan Hill is a live digital hub created to explore the history, communities, and cultural legacy of the neighborhood that existed where Lincoln Center stands today.
The experience brings together essays, archival material, documentary and multimedia work, events and exhibits, interactive features, bilingual content, and the voices of contributors and community members.
My role
Experience Designer and Build Manager
I designed the experience and managed the build in collaboration with Marketing, Brand, institutional teams, and external partners, with care for the histories and communities represented.

Experience principles
Design should support the material, not compete with it.
- 01Lead with context
- 02Support many editorial forms
- 03Design for continued growth
- 04Treat language as access
- 05Let the material lead
- 06Steward the work with care
Challenge
Many forms of evidence needed to live within one coherent resource.
Editorial landing page
The entry point establishes context before inviting exploration.
The experience introduces the project’s purpose and creates pathways into articles, documentary work, multimedia, events, exhibits, contributors, and the growing content library.

Content system
A durable structure supports many editorial forms.
Reusable patterns give essays, archives, video, audio, photo work, and interactive experiences appropriate room while preserving a consistent reading and navigation system.

Filterable library
A growing archive needs more than a chronological feed.
The content library helps visitors distinguish articles from multimedia and move through an expanding body of scholarship and storytelling.

Bilingual content
Language is part of access and representation.
The platform supports English and Spanish material within the same editorial system, allowing bilingual stories and descriptions to remain connected rather than treated as a separate experience.
Multimedia and interaction
Different histories ask for different forms.
The platform makes room for documentary video, interviews, playlists, recordings, an interactive map, a digital comic, and archival photo essays alongside written scholarship.

Collaboration and stewardship
The work required care across disciplines and institutions.
I approached the design as stewardship: creating clarity, access, and durability for material shaped by historians, archivists, artists, journalists, community members, institutional teams, and partner organizations.
Current outcome
A live resource designed to grow over time.
The shipped platform holds a substantial and expanding collection of scholarship, stories, archives, and community voices while providing a coherent public path through the material.
Reflection
Editorial design is at its best when it creates room for people to encounter complexity with care.
The platform’s role is to support continued learning and access—not to reduce this history to a campaign or a single institutional narrative.
